Diapering and Toileting Procedures

Diapering and Toileting Policies and Procedures are an important part of any early childhood program and are of both interest and sometimes concern for parents. Our staff is well trained in these procedures that are outlined below.

1. Lay out the child's diaper and needed supplies on the changing table prior to placing the child on the table.
2. Always change the children on the changing table or on their sleep mats; never on the floor.
3. Place a clean section of paper on the changing surface under the child. This paper should be large enough to cover the length of the child's body.
4. Put on disposable gloves, take off the soiled diaper and place it aside either on paper or in the diaper pail, while always steadying the child.
5. Using a "wet wipe" or a clean paper towel with warm water and soap, wipe the genital area front to back. Place the wipe or paper towel aside on the paper until putting it in the diaper pail.
6. Apply ointment, if requested and provided by the parent.
7. Put on clean diaper.
8. Wash child's hands, remove the child from table and place the child in an appropriate play or sleep area.
9. Fold the disposable diaper and then wrap the cleaning towels in changing table paper and dispose of in a covered diaper pail.
10. Clean diapering surfaces thoroughly using a cleaning solution and bleach.
11. Wash hands thoroughly using soap and water.
12. Mark the child's individual daily chart.
